Ju 488. Early in 1945 Japan arranged to produce the aircraft under licence, but no aircraft were produced. The protracted development of the He 177 coupled with the failure of Heinkel to eradicate many of its serious short comings led the Junkers design bureau to propose a relatively simple means of developing a strategic bomber with a minimum amount of disturbance to existing designs and production lines. It was not designed to function as an “America Bomber”, not having the range to reach across the Atlantic, but rather to be a quick to develop heavy bomber that could at least take the war to Britain.
These would be mated to new inner wing panels fitted with two more engines and an additional midsection fuselage assembly. One prototype was begun but never finished.
