The river is gorgeous and full of swans/ducks, and when it's sunny (even when freezing out), the townspeople line the river for walks, taking their pets out, feeding the ducks, etc. For my purposes the location was ideal with an excellent local transport system although most places of interest are in reach on foot. 1. Walking along the river Isar is a pleasure. We found great results, but some are outside Bad Toelz. We could walk everywhere, to the old town center, up Calvary Mountain, for hikes along the Isar and the forest. Beautiful surrounding areas, and only about 10 minutes' drive from a good smaller-scale ski resort in Lenggries, and 20 minutes from the beautiful Tegernsee. The final nail in the coffin was the building of the Walchensee power station in the 1920s, which meant that the flow of water in the Isar was insufficient for the river traffic.The tourist office offers pamphlets in both English and German which detail walks on both the 'historic' and the 'spa' side of the river and up to the Leonardi chapel visible on the hill on the edge of town.
